A wallpaper estimate should account for the wall underneath the paper. Texture, old coatings and previous repairs can affect both the preparation required and the appearance of the finished room. A new wall is not automatically a ready wall.
What should you photograph before asking for an estimate?
Take one photo of the entire wall and a few close-ups of its surface. Include corners, repaired areas and any loose wallpaper or paint. A photo taken with light falling across the wall can make texture easier to see. Tell us if you know when the room was last painted or what is underneath the existing paper.
Share the wallpaper product link as well. The same wall may need a different preparation approach for a thin printed paper than for a heavier wallcovering. Photos are a useful starting point, but we may need to inspect the surface before confirming the work.
Texture, damage and existing wallpaper
Wallpaper is not a reliable way to conceal bumps, holes or unstable paint. Depending on the surface, preparation may involve removal, repair, smoothing and cleaning before a compatible primer is applied. Existing wallpaper should be assessed rather than assumed to be a suitable base for a new layer.
After removal, the wall may reveal repairs that were not visible during the initial review. Ask how unexpected preparation will be discussed before additional work proceeds. Our wallpaper removal and wall preparation services can be planned alongside the new installation.
Primer is part of the installation system
A wallcovering primer is selected for the substrate and the wallpaper system, not simply for its color. The wall should be sound, clean and dry, and the chosen products need to be compatible. Follow the wallpaper, adhesive and primer manufacturers’ instructions, including their drying or curing requirements.
For background, ROMAN’s wall preparation guide explains why smoothing, cleaning and product-appropriate priming matter. That guidance does not replace an assessment of your wall or the instructions for your selected paper.
Questions to settle before the crew arrives
- Does the estimate include removal, wall repair and primer, or only hanging the new wallpaper?
- Who is responsible for moving furniture and providing clear access to the walls?
- Is another contractor painting, installing trim or working in the room?
- Does anyone need to approve extra preparation if removal exposes damage?
- When will the wall be ready for installation after the preparation products have dried or cured?
For an occupied home, mention any access restrictions and which rooms need to remain in use. For a construction project, give us the contact responsible for coordinating the trades. These details help us plan the visit without making assumptions about your schedule.
