To estimate wallpaper, you need the width and height of each wall plus the dimensions and pattern details of the product. Dividing wall area by the area printed on a roll label is only a rough starting point: it does not tell you how many usable, full-height strips the roll will provide.
Gather the wallpaper details first
- Roll width and length: use the dimensions of the material supplied, not just the price unit.
- Pattern repeat: the distance before the design repeats vertically, as specified by the manufacturer.
- Match type: random, straight or half-drop. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions if the product uses a different arrangement.
- Product reference: brand, name, colorway and a link or photo of the specification sheet.
Check the packaging before placing an order. For example, Thibaut’s calculator notes that its wallpaper is priced by the single roll but packaged in double rolls. Other suppliers and materials use different ordering units, including yards or mural panels. Never assume that every listing means the same thing by “one roll.”
Measure each wall separately
Record wall width and height, label the walls in your photos and note sloped ceilings, stairs, alcoves and built-ins. Use one unit system consistently. If you have several heights, do not replace them with an average: a taller section can change the required strip length.
Include the positions and sizes of doors and windows. Do not automatically subtract all openings from the order. The cuts around them still have to work with the pattern and the surrounding strips. An installer can review which offcuts are actually useful.
Why the pattern changes the calculation
A strip must reach from the top to the bottom of the area being covered, with room for trimming. A repeated design may require extra length so the next strip aligns. A half-drop pattern offsets neighboring strips, so its layout cannot be treated like a random match.
Here is a simple planning example, not an order recommendation: a 120-inch-wide wall and 20-inch-wide paper require six strip widths. That tells you the strip count across the wall, but not the roll count. You still need to check how many correctly matched, full-height strips can be cut from each roll.
Use the calculator, then verify the order
Enter your product and wall details in the Broccato wallpaper calculator. Treat the result as a preliminary estimate, especially for mixed wall heights, large repeats, murals or specialty wallcoverings. Keep the result with the product link and your photos for review.
Ask about a project-specific reserve and the supplier’s batch availability before ordering. There is no single waste percentage that fits every room and pattern. The final quantity should reflect the planned layout, packaging and any material you want to retain for a future repair.
